Gorilla Portrait
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda 2019
My back was pressed up against a tree a few feet in front of the limit the ranger had told us to retreat behind. I was trapped as the thundering of feet and knuckles became louder. This magnificent creature came barreling through the depths of the jungle to catch up with his migrating troop. I heard a breathy whisper in my ear to stay completely still. We were in his path, in between him and his family. The ranger trusted my respect for these beautiful beings, and I trusted his knowledge and expertise with them. I remember feeling as if I was blending into the bark, becoming invisible. The gorilla, however, fully saw me and decided he would let me in to his world. He sat and seemed to pose not ten feet from me, perfectly blended in his habitat. And then he sashayed so close past me that I could feel the air ripple through my arm hairs, and calmly rejoined his troop. This moment remains one of the most singularly spectacular experiences of my life, to know and be known by the wild itself.
