Owls, cross-culturally, are symbols of wisdom and intuition, as well as transition and even warnings. They have long been revered and honoured by the Norse, Celtic, Native American and Ancient Greek peoples to name a few. Being in their presence, one can feel the magic and mystery they bring. Short eared owls are unusual members of the owl family, nesting on the ground or in low shrubbery and hunting during the daylight hours. They beautifully blend in with the colours and patterns of their open brushland ecosystem, highlighted in this image when the colour is stripped away. Short eared owls have learned ways to co-exist with humans, using our presence as a natural deterent for their competitors - Hawks - thus increasing their chances at a successful hunt.
